Head and Neck Surgery

The Head and Neck Surgery service specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. Our board-certified otolaryngologists have extensive experience in the management and rehabilitation of patients with head and neck cancer.

Working closely with medical and radiation oncologists, the team evaluates new patients, reviews diagnostic studies, and develops individualized treatment plans through multidisciplinary Tumor Board conferences at Karmanos Cancer Institute and Corewell Health–Dearborn. Advanced surgical techniques, including endoscopic and robotic approaches, are used whenever appropriate to minimize surgical morbidity.

Many patients receive evaluation and treatment at Karmanos Cancer Institute or one of the department's affiliated institutions.

Education and Research

The clinical service provides extensive opportunities for resident education and fellowship training. Faculty members hold appointments at Wayne State University, participate in clinical trials, and conduct both basic and translational research focused on the early detection and treatment of head and neck cancer.

The primary research laboratory is located on the fourth floor of the Prentis Building at Karmanos Cancer Institute under the co-direction of Dr. Ho-Sheng Lin. The 1,000-square-foot laboratory is fully equipped for cutting-edge cancer research, with additional laboratory space at the Detroit Medical Center dedicated to proteomics research.
