Narrative Bio
Ho-Sheng Lin, MD, FACS is a Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine. He received his MD from Yale University School of Medicine and then went on to complete an Otolaryngology residency at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and New York University Medical Center. After his residency, Dr. Lin completed fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at Stanford University. He joined the Department of Otolaryngology at WSU in 2002.
Dr. Lin's clinical interests include surgical treatment of cancer and disease involving the mouth, throat, neck, thyroid, parathyroid, and salivary glands as well as surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. He has special interest in the use of new and minimally invasive technology in head and neck surgery. He has used Harmonic technology for minimally invasive thyroid surgery. He is the first surgeon in the state of Michigan to use the robotic technology (da Vinci robot) to perform surgery on the larynx (voice box) and pharynx (throat) for treatment of cancer and sleep apnea. He is also the first Otolaryngologist in Michigan to perform a robotic-assisted thyroidectomy (thyroid surgery without a neck incision). Dr. Lin is also a Principal Investigator in the use of novel and minimally invasive surgical approaches for treatment of OSA. He has been involved in several industry sponsored clinical trials such as the Pillar implant (Restore Medical) and hypoglossal nerve implant (Inspire Medical) to assess the effectiveness of these new surgical approaches.
Dr. Lin's basic science research, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs and National Cancer Institute, focuses on the development of a blood test for early detection of head and neck cancer in high risk patients. In a paper published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers, and Preventions, he showed the use of high throughput protein microarray technology for identification of promising cancer biomarkers. A diagnostic strategy, based on analysis of the interactions of these biomarkers with patients' sera, was capable of detecting cancer with 85% accuracy. He has been invited to give talks on this topic in national and international meetings including the NIH's Early Detection Research Network meetings in Washington DC and Seattle. He is currently working in collaboration with investigators from Johns Hopkins and University of Pittsburgh to further validate this diagnostic strategy.
In addition to his involvement in the residency program, Dr. Lin is also involved in both head and neck as well as sleep fellowship programs at WSU. Dr. Lin has published extensively with over 60 publications in peer reviewed journals. He has served on the editorial board of several journals including Laryngoscope, World Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Otology & Rhinology, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Journal of Tumor, and Case Reports in Otolaryngology. He also served as an ad hoc reviewer for many other journals including Cancer Biomarkers, Head and Neck, Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, World Journal of Surgical Oncology, and Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Lin is a diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and is an active member of many professional societies including Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Triological Society, American Sleep Association, American College of Surgeons, Society of Robotic Surgery, International Surgical Sleep Society, American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and American Head & Neck Society. He is active in many committees including the Sleep Disorder Committee and Endocrine Surgery Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology and the Section of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He currently has active staff privileges at Karmanos Cancer Institute, Harper University Hospital, Detroit Receiving Hospital, Oakwood Hospital, and John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. He has been named Best Doctor in America (Best Doctors Inc.) and Top Doctor (Castle Connolly) for several years. Most recently, he was named the Top Doctor on the US News and World Report.
