Narrative Bio

Dr. Eleanor Chan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine, and Division Chief of Otology and Neurotology. She specializes in the evaluation and treatment of hearing loss, chronic ear infections, auditory implants, dizziness and balance disorders, tinnitus, facial nerve conditions, and posterior skull base diseases such as acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, encephaloceles, cerebrospinal fluid leaks and vascular compression syndromes.

Dr. Chan received her B.Sc.(hon.) in Pharmacology and medical school M.D. degrees at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She completed her Residency in Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Ottawa in Canada. In 2006, she was chosen for one of only 12 spots nationally to pursue a Fellowship in Otology, Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery at the Michigan Ear Institute. She has been a full-time academic physician at the Michigan Ear Institute prior to joining our department, and will continue serving her patients at both sites. Dr. Chan is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, and maintains an active research component to her clinical practice. She has contributed several book chapters and journal articles to the scientific literature. She gives regular lectures on ear and skull base diseases to her peers at conferences as well as to community groups. She also teaches one of the largest and most reputable temporal bone surgical dissection courses in the country.

Outside of work, Dr. Chan juggles the busy schedule of being a mother, and pursuing her hobbies of music, art and competitive swimming. She is an active volunteer at her kids’ schools and helps to coach her son’s junior Robotics team. She is an accomplished concert pianist, and holds an Associateship Diploma for Piano Performer from the Royal Conservatory of Music
